February 2009: Letter from the
President
Dear Friends and
Colleagues,
North Carolina
Suzuki teachers, students and families are at work daily. From time to time,
we stop-- to gather together, to celebrate and to teach and learn together.
With the upcoming State-Wide Play-in and Annual Membership Meeting at
Greensboro College, I look forward to seeing many of you. We have reason to
celebrate!
Programs are
blossoming in every corner of the State of North Carolina. Young, innovative
teachers are taking their places in classrooms and home studios; and they
are filling leadership roles, not only in their local communities, but at
the state and national level. Students are advancing in thriving programs.
Joanne Bath continues to teach talented young teachers in her award-winning
program in Suzuki Pedagogy at East Carolina University in Greenville. Nan
Freeman continues to serve as ambassador around the world with annual tours
of the North Carolina Touring program and she runs a successful Summer
Institute, Music in the Mountains. Guitar teacher, William Kossler traveled
to Japan as an ambassador for new programs abroad. Nancy Brown, pioneer and
advocate for Early Childhood Education, continues to teach us about the most
important years of educating children. And this is just the tip of the
iceberg.
Our state
association, now an SAA Chapter Affiliate is growing in new ways. My
personal dream is to extend our reach by delegating jobs through a greater
network. By that I mean accomplishing our mission to become more inclusive
as well as more diverse by increasing the size of the leadership circle. The
new board will include an at-large position and a parent advisor. Plans for
the website include a page for Early Childhood Education. To learn more and
to contribute your ideas, please come to the annual membership meeting on
March 21. Join your friends and colleagues for a stimulating event; recharge
your batteries and enjoy the music-making, teaching and learning.
I’d like to take
this opportunity to thank Betsy Hughes, treasurer; Lisa Randolph, Secretary;
Joanne Bath, nominating chairman and mentor; Committee chairs: William
Kossler, Morgen Champney, Katy Lawton, Frances Duff; newsletter editor,
David Teague; webmaster, Russ Gaffney; SAA Conference delegates, Katherine
Wiley and Joseph Pecoraro; Play-in Chair, Eve Hubbard and the team of
teachers who are working together to make the event successful.
Thank you for the
opportunity to serve the State of North Carolina—and together with you--the
teachers, students and parents-- to make a contribution to realizing Doctor
Suzuki’s dream in our state.
Sincerely,
Karen Moorman
